Marking Vietnam Culture Day on November 24: Awakening the Power of Culture through Creative Spaces

2026 marks a significant milestone in Vietnam’s cultural life, as Vietnam Culture Day (November 24) will be officially observed for the first time under the Prime Minister’s Plan for the 2026 – 2030 period. The occasion carries profound political, cultural and social significance, while reaffirming the vital role of culture in the country’s development as Vietnam enters a new era.

According to Guidance No. 31-HD/BTGDVTW issued by the Central Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Commission, the organization and promotion of Vietnam Culture Day aim to foster a shared understanding and coordinated action across society, affirming culture and people as the spiritual foundation, an important endogenous resource, a driving force for development and a pillar of the country’s rapid and sustainable growth. The occasion also seeks to inspire patriotism and national pride, while honoring Vietnam’s cultural values and the people who create, preserve, transmit and promote them every day.

The significance of 2026 is further underscored by the 80th anniversary of the First National Cultural Conference, held on November 24, 1946, where President Ho Chi Minh articulated the enduring principle: “Culture must light the way for the nation to advance”. Eight decades later, this spirit remains highly relevant, while being carried forward through new approaches to cultural development amid digital transformation, international integration and the growth of the creative economy. Culture is no longer viewed solely as something to be preserved, but increasingly as a driver of development, embedded in policymaking and in all aspects of social life.

One of the key directions highlighted in the Guidance is the shift from a predominantly preservation-oriented mindset toward a balanced approach that combines preservation with creativity. This means transforming cultural values into knowledge, intellectual assets, cultural products, creative industries and national soft power. The approach also reflects a broader trend among creative cities around the world: using heritage as a foundation for creating new value, preserving identity while stimulating economic development and improving quality of life.

Against this backdrop, the Hanoi Festival of Creative Design 2026 offers a compelling example of approaching culture through creativity and innovation. More than a series of events centered on architecture, design and the arts, the Festival seeks to build connections between heritage, communities and creative industries, helping bring culture into the everyday life of the city in more dynamic and meaningful ways.

A key highlight of this year’s Festival is the 2026 Creative Space Design Competition, themed “Hanoi  –  Awakening Urban Spaces”. The competition encourages architects, designers, artists, students and the wider creative community to propose new solutions for public spaces, adaptive-reuse projects and sites with historical and cultural significance across the capital. Each proposal is not merely a design solution, but also a way of retelling Hanoi’s story through the language of contemporary creativity, bringing heritage closer to the realities of present-day life.

This spirit closely aligns with the objectives of Vietnam Culture Day: placing people at the center as both the creators and beneficiaries of culture. When architects, designers, artists, artisans, businesses and citizens can all contribute to preserving and promoting cultural identity through new ideas, products and spaces, culture can truly become a resource for development.

Celebrating Vietnam Culture Day is therefore not simply about participating in an event or communications campaign. It is also an opportunity to take practical action to bring the nation’s cultural values into everyday life. Every renovated building, revitalized public space and creative idea inspired by local culture contributes to enriching the identity of Hanoi and Vietnam.

With this spirit, the Hanoi Festival of Creative Design 2026 seeks to work alongside the creative community, professionals and the public to make culture a driving force for innovation, connect tradition with the future, and share Vietnamese values with audiences at home and around the world. When culture is nurtured through creativity, every space can become more than a place to live: it can become a repository of memory, a source of inspiration and a platform for shaping the future.
