Notably, guided by a visionary 100-year master plan and the strategic implementation of Resolution 80 on the development of cultural industries, Hanoi is steadfastly charting its course to become a Creative Capital of regional and international prestige. In 2025, the groundbreaking of iconic cultural projects and monumental developments commenced… aimed at laying the infrastructural foundation for a thriving cultural economy. Simultaneously, these architectural landmarks are poised to assert Hanoi’s global standing, profoundly shaping the capital’s future urban tapestry.

In this issue, Architecture Magazine is honored to present to our readers the Special Feature: Continuing Heritage in Contemporary Architecture, bringing together a multitude of interdisciplinary experts. This feature serves as a professional discourse, unveiling multidimensional perspectives, theoretical frameworks, and nuanced paradigms of heritage acculturation in contemporary practice, seeking to provoke fundamental inquiries into the essence of architectural cultural identity amidst modern exigencies and the imperative of sustainable development.

A pivotal highlight of this thematic exploration is the unveiling of Architecture Magazine’s special publication: “Selected Articles from 40 Years of Architecture Magazine: 1983-2023.” This release commemorates Vietnam Architecture Day (April 27th) and marks the Vietnam Association of Architects’ official presentation of the Decision to appoint Journalist Bui Thi Thanh Huong as Editor-in-Chief. This monumental anthology transcends a mere archival collection; it is a profound reflection on the magazine’s enduring legacy of connection, catalyzing renewed professional dialogues driven by social responsibility and creative aspiration.

This edition of Architecture Magazine concludes with a reflection on the 2026 Pritzker Architecture Prize Laureate-Arch. Smiljan Radic-and his message of freedom and authenticity. In his vision, architecture is distilled into pure spatial essence, a sanctuary where every message can resonate and be intimately understood!

We proudly present to you Issue 04/2026 of Architecture Magazine!

Architecture Magazine

Page: 11
From the Discourse on Northern Architectural Identity Pre-1975 to Strategic Orientation: Modern-Vernacular in the Context of Globalization

• Arch. Nguyen Manh Tri
• Assoc. Prof. Dr. Arch. Nguyen Viet Huy

Amidst the relentless tides of urbanization and global integration, Vietnamese architecture confronts a familiar conundrum: On one hand, there is the palpable pressure of globalization, demanding cutting-edge, world-class modern architectural works that broadcast national developmental prowess. On the other, there lies a profound anxiety regarding the erosion of the national ethos and indigenous hallmarks within the built environment. The directive to cultivate an “advanced culture deeply imbued with national identity” emerges as both an intrinsic necessity and a socio-political imperative. In our pursuit of architectural identity, we frequently stumble into a paradox: The more aggressively we attempt to manifest national character, the further the architecture seems alienated from contemporary reality. Consider the grandiose concrete curved roofs of neo-traditional pagodas, or the mechanical, superficial application of lotus motifs and Dong Son bronze drum patterns in modern designs as mere decorative pastiche… This amounts to a facile visual “performance,” where the essence of identity is commodified into a souvenir rather than nurtured as a living entity.

By re-examining the paradigm of identity in Northern Vietnamese architecture prior to 1975, this paper seeks to unravel a fundamental query: Does architectural identity reside merely on the ornamental surface, or is it deeply ingrained within the underlying spatial and structural logic? Is identity the byproduct of replicating the past, or the organic manifestation of resolving contemporary realities?

Page: 16
The Vietnam Association of Architects Presents the Decision to Appoint Ms. Bui Thi Thanh Huong as Editor-in-Chief of Architecture Magazine

• Thuy An

On the afternoon of April 6th, 2026, at the headquarters of the Vietnam Association of Architects (40 Tang Bat Ho, Hai Ba Trung, Hanoi), the Vietnam Association of Architects hosted a solemn ceremony to present the official Decision appointing Journalist Bui Thi Thanh Huong as the Editor-in-Chief of Architecture Magazine. While an elevation in administrative rank is typically interpreted merely as an expansion of jurisdictional authority, for Hue, the implications are profoundly deeper: The city is compelled to establish a novel developmental paradigm, one that is distinctively unique and rigorously sustainable, to avoid being subsumed by the ubiquitous “race” of rampant urbanization occurring everywhere. In this endeavor, Hue possesses an unparalleled asset that few metropolises can claim: A magnificent tapestry of cultural, natural, and scenic heritage of outstanding value, serving as the bedrock for a developmental trajectory firmly anchored in indigenous identity.

Page: 46
MO He’ritage – Rewriting the Heritage Narrative “Architecture as a Microcosm”

The concepts of “place” and “self” have dominated contemporary architectural discourse for decades. MO He’ritage shuns ostentation; it refuses to treat architecture as a mere spectacle to be judged by the passage of time. Instead, it is beautifully simple, intimate, and as gentle as a pure, emotionally resonant childhood memory. Conceived as part of a boutique series of resort villas and homestays, the name “MO” originates from the local Central Vietnamese dialect for “where,” simultaneously serving as a warm, indigenous invitation.

Nestled in the storied land of two kings west of Hanoi (Son Tay, historically known as Xu Doai), the project acts as a vital node linking a network of historical and scenic landmarks, including Va Temple, Duong Lam Ancient Village, and Ba Vi Mountain. Embracing the ethos of “rewriting the heritage narrative,” the architect masterfully transmutes the tangible and intangible heritage of Xu Doai into a compelling work of contemporary architecture.

Page: 57
The gentle movenment of urban heritage
Palace Hotel Saigon & Bong Sen Hotel: An Adaptive Reuse Strategy – A Dialogue Between Memory and the Metropolis

• Dr. Arch. In the wake of the announcement, the international press resoundingly praised the “radical originality” inherent in his oeuvre: architectural works that seemingly rest weightlessly upon the landscape, exuding a fragile yet commanding beauty. However, striking an even deeper chord than his architectural linguistics is Radic’s disposition toward his career’s highest honor. While the global architectural community tirelessly attempts to decode the “Chilean Message” or “Radicalism” embedded within his built works, he calmly declares: “There is no message.” He confesses to entering the profession “unconsciously,” unburdened by grandiose missions or socio-political manifestos. Herein lies the central paradox: A prize venerating contribution that are “profound for humanity” has been bestowed upon an architect who dares to profess an absence of discursive intent.

Page: 10 Foreword from the editorial board Dear Readers, Vietnam is standing on the threshold of an era of profound resurgence.
