Major cities such as Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City are facing numerous challenges, including air pollution, traffic congestion, pressure on the healthcare system, a lack of green space, … Therefore, focusing on and investing in urban “health” has become a top priority within strategies for developing smart and sustainable cities. Moreover, urban health policy is not solely the responsibility of the healthcare sector but of every field that impacts society, the economy, and the environment.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has long identified urban “health” as a priority issue for the 21st century. This issue of Architecture Magazine presents the Special Feature: “Architecture for Improving Urban ‘Health’ – In Line with Sustainable Development Goals.” The engagement of experts, architects, and our broad readership with this theme underscores the role and responsibility of the professional community in addressing society’s pressing issues. Achieving a healthy city aligned with sustainable development goals requires a foundational commitment to placing people and health at the center of urban development, and it demands a multidisciplinary approach encompassing urban planning, economic development, social sciences, and public health.

As a congratulatory note from the professional community, this issue of Architecture Magazine is honored to feature the 70-year journey of development and growth of the Vietnam National Construction Consultants Corporation (VNCC), highlighting its contributions to Vietnamese architecture during the Reform era. Looking ahead, VNCC will continue to be a nexus for generations of architects and engineers, solidifying its status as a prestigious brand and a pioneering force in the construction consulting sector, making significant contributions to the nation’s overall development.

We are honored to present to our readers Issue 09/2025 of Architecture Magazine!

Architecture Magazine

Page: 29
Openasia headquarters and the journey of creating a workspace full of vitality

Arch. Tran Thanh Vu

In Hanoi, the Openasia Headquarters stands as a vibrant testament to the value of green and sustainable building renovation. Tucked away on a small street in the heart of Hoan Kiem, the building is reminiscent of a discreet, shining gem: its facade, with shimmering perforated metal panels that reflect the changing light of day, is both modern and elegant. Inside, the open-plan office features distinctively designed and decorated corners, bearing the hallmark of the “stylish living” philosophy that Openasia Group has pursued for nearly three decades.

Page: 32
Evergreen estate and a pioneering milestone in bringing Green Architecture to the Urban level in Southeast Asia

By Le Hoai An

In Vietnam, a significant milestone was marked when Evergreen Estate by GP.Invest became the first project in the country, and a pioneer in Southeast Asia, to pursue LEED for Communities (LfC) certification—a comprehensive rating system for sustainable development at the community scale developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).

Page: 68
Urban design for public health: A case study from think playgrounds projects

Arch. Chu Kim Duc

Rapid urbanization in Vietnam has led to a shortage of public space, especially green areas and playgrounds for children. Residents of increasingly crowded cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City are well aware of and frequently discuss these issues: children lack playgrounds; streets are unsafe; the elderly struggle to find places to exercise; and young people have difficulty finding spaces to socialize. Safe and functional public spaces for community activities are severely lacking.¹ This is an issue that affects both physical and mental health. For the past two decades, urban children in Vietnam have been growing up with very little free, outdoor play space. We are seeing a rise in childhood obesity and psychological issues.² Furthermore, safe and accessible public spaces play a crucial role in social connection, allowing anyone to find a place to socialize and meet near their home, accessible daily and free of charge. This is particularly crucial for vulnerable groups who have little voice in society, such as young children, the frail elderly, the poor, and people with disabilities.³ Public space is already scarce, and even existing, officially managed green spaces like parks and flower gardens, such as Thong Nhat Park and many others, are plagued by problems with waste management and maintenance.

Page: 73
Re-examining the Socio-cultural role of Landscape focal points through the European Landscape Convention

Dr. Arch. Luong Thuy Trang

This article analyzes the socio-cultural role of landscape focal points through the lens of the European Landscape Convention. The research explores how the Convention has shifted the perception of landscape from a purely aesthetic consideration to recognizing it as vibrant socio-cultural spaces. By analyzing the Convention’s core principles and applying them to specific cases, the article clarifies the multifaceted role of landscape focal points in shaping local identity, creating meaningful public spaces, and promoting community engagement. The research findings indicate the necessity of a holistic approach that balances heritage conservation and sustainable development in contemporary landscape planning and management.

Page: 10 Foreword from the editorial board Dear readers, In Vietnam, urbanization is occurring at a rapid pace.
