For Architecture – Interior of contemporary Vietnamese houses, the story of finding a road, a separate pathway is becoming more and more urgent, especially in reality as the need to highlight aesthetics, personality and style of Customers is also increasingly sophisticated and it requires more creative designs.

With that in mind, for many years, the Dream House Design Competition initiated by the Magazine of Architecture has accompanied the professionals in studying, searching for and proposing housing design solutions, shaping culture in living – “in order to emphasise and promote the “Ego” of Vietnamese people” in the interpretation of a researcher who has contributed to this Special Theme of the Magazine of Architecture’s issue.

The theme of the August issue is inspired by the topic of the 2022 Dream House Design Competition: “Personality of living space” with the contribution of leading scholars, focusing on clarifying individual trends – Humanisation in architectural and interior design. From trend to style it is always a long way to go, but from the bright lights, though small but still sparkling, from the awards of the Dream House Events over the year: “… with new experiments, not following the internationalisation of the market, the Vietnamese soulful personalities of both designers and home-owners will give us hope for a not-so-distant future, when architectural style for furniture designed in Vietnam will be shaped first in the housing category”. This is also the message of the professionals, of Vietnam Association of Architects in the journey to find and promote the identity as well as to build the so-called contemporary Vietnamese architectural styles.

Our sincere thanks go to the Association of Interior Architecture – Vietnam Association of Architects – for the collaboration on this special issue! We would like to show our gratitude to the business, manufacturers and brands that have accompanied the Magazine of Architecture and the Dream House Design competition over the years!

We are honoured to introduce to our Readers here and tåhere the Special issue of August 2022 of the Magazine of Architecture!

Page: 11
TOWARDS A NEW VIETNAMESE STYLE IN ARCHITECTURE AND INTERIOR DESIGN FOR CONTEMPORARY HOUSES
• Vu Hong Cuong

Architecture and home interior design in Vietnam today is facing many challenges together with opportunities. It is necessary to welcome new cultural values of the world, but sometimes it makes us go astray on our way. “Green architecture” or “green building” only helps Vietnamese architecture shape the so-called “body”. The soul – Vietnamese style in interior design – is in our own hands, from investors and designers to critical theorists through experience from practice along with the research and design from the big ego of Vietnamese people.

Page: 18
APPLICATION OF TRADITIONAL MATERIALS IN PAINTING TO INTERIOR DESIGN OF VIETNAMESE CONTEMPORARY HOMES
• Nguyen Thanh Van

Looking at traditional Vietnamese painting, we cannot help mentioning the two materials that make up the so-called “Vietnamese soul” which are oil paint and silk. From the angle of the application of materials such as oil paint, silk, etc. in the interior design of houses, we can see certain values that these materials bring, that is, to the design products, a bold Asian character. It also contains and shows modernity. However, currently, in the interior design of all types of houses in Vietnam, these materials have not been used properly. In this article, from the perspective of an interior designer, the author would like readers to have an overview of some traditional materials in Vietnamese painting, from which it is possible to apply them to home design.

Page: 38
BUILDING OF THE FACULTY OF FRENCH LANGUAGE
• Nguyen Tran Duc Anh

Asked to choose three best school buildings in Vietnam (excluding Hanoi – Amsterdam School inaugurated on the occasion of the millennial anniversary of Hanoi and designed by Vietnamese architects), I would still think that these buildings are either designed or heavily influenced by the French. The first building to mention is Da Lat Pedagogical College – a masterpiece poem in the highlands; the second to highlight is Indochina University (later Hanoi University, now part of University of Natural Sciences – Hanoi National University) – a very classic urban architecture; and the third is the building of the Faculty of French Language – Hanoi University of Foreign Language Pedagogy.

While the first two buildings are recognisable with the main blocks which look really impressive; the building of the Faculty of French Language is different. It is a harmonious complex with many small buildings, but in terms of function, scale and position in the master plan, there is no outstanding block. Everything is finely mixed into a complex as a whole and so well interwoven. The master plan is a campus with many blocks located all over a large area. The functions are fully defined and well designed. The highest block is four storeys high (main lecture hall), the lowest block is one storey (administrative office, meeting hall).

Page: 42
SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURE – LET’S LEARN FROM NATURE!
• Le Thi Hoang Nhi • Le Thi Thu Ha

Architects play a very important role. The current view of architectural design is towards sustainability, with the aim of bringing our planet back into balance. With the goal of creating buildings that are socially and ecologically sustainable, in order to enhance the health of the occupants living inside the building as well as to minimise the negative impacts of the building on the environment.

Architects want to design climate-friendly or climate-resilient buildings. The solutions we are currently using are to reduce waste, limit the consumption of non-renewable energy resources (also known as fossil energy: coal, oil, gas, etc.), enhance using natural energy and environmentally friendly materials, etc.

In addition, there is another aspect that we also need to consider – that is learning from nature – biomimetic design. Animals and plants have passed a long period of existence on earth, and thus developed different strategies for survival. It is an endless source of inspiration for biomimetic designs, providing so many good lessons for creating sustainable built environments.

Page: 46
BUILDING A CLIENT’S CHARACTERISTICS AS THE BASIS TO DESIGN A STYLISH HOME• Tran Ngoc Thanh Trang

In architecture and interior design, a client’s portrait is a concept used to refer to a detailed and comprehensive sketch of the client(s) of the project in particular and of the enterprise in general. To build a client’s portrait, it often requires information such as demographics (gender, age group, location, income, etc.), their interests, or opinions, culture, memories, aspirations, experiences and values they emphasise. Understanding the above information well enough, the designers can come up with a more efficient and accurate design solution, or set up a strategy to convince clients more easily.

Building a client’s portrait in reality is not easy or merely a simple collection of information, but designers also have to analyse, evaluate data and use their sensitivity, then to find “touch points” to offer design services. It can be “pain” or problems that homeowners have encountered in life that remain unsolved, or secret “desires” behind their dream of a cosy home.

Page: 54
STRUCTURES AND DESIGN CONCEPTS TO ENHANCE COMMUNITY CONTACT IN CO-HOUSING
• Vo Hoang Khanh • Ngo Le Minh

In recent years, there have been many co-living housing communities, such as urban co-housing, rural co-housing, multi-generational co-housing, showing that the trend of mixed housing is developing with various sizes and facilities. However, not all of those mixed-housing communities offer true community and good social connectivity. Additional spaces such as lobby, corridor, etc., in addition to circulation, have not yet been properly considered for the exchange function or promote community and social connection. Moreover, the development needs of the society as well as human communication in the modern require that designers of living quarters should pay more attention to community communication as well as space for exchange and sharing. The article aims to explore, analyse and propose design solutions to enhance community and social connectivity in co- housing.

Page: 64
“SECOND HOME” TO FULFIL THE DREAM OF THE VIETNAMESE• Thieu Minh Tuan

Housing does not only exist in material values but also contains spiritual and emotional values for people. Each house has its own life that includes different stories and philosophies. The house can be compared to a picture or a portrait that reflects the owner’s lifestyle, culture and dreams. However, objective conditions such as urban infrastructure, quality of living environment, population density, etc. influence housing projects in new urban areas that may not fully meet the needs of people about an ideal living space. Therefore, in the past ten years, it has been obvious that the trend of owning a “second home” – a place to stay at the weekend is gradually becoming popular among the middle class in Vietnam. The trend in architecture and interior design of weekend houses are also very diverse, with many characteristics, clearly reflecting the real demand at a higher level in terms of aesthetics and personality compared to common houses.

Page: 70
DEVELOPING QUANG NGAI INTO A CREATIVE CITY
• Phan Bao An • Le Thi Kim Anh

The city authority needs to regard smart vision as a basis to make all decisions and action plans towards sustainable development as an ultimate goal, without compromising socio-economic development or environment. This is where residents will experience best services and the risks and problems caused by the city in the context of climate change will be solved. Only then will Quang Ngai City develop vigorously, optimise its potentials and become an economic centre as well as a smart city, focusing on sustainability and quality of life in the future.

Page: 75
THE PUBLIC TASTES IN URBAN HOME INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE TODAY AND THE ROLES OF DESIGNERS
• Luong Minh Thu

In the context of on-going globalisation, science and technology, and integration as well, Vietnamese architecture and interior design in recent years have made remarkable progress. This is consistent with the global trend, bringing many benefits but also disadvantages. One of the most obvious problems is causing a “crisis” of “aesthetic tastes” in low-rise housing projects, such as townhouses and villas, and also high-rise apartments in large cities. In this article, the author focuses on the relationship between aesthetic tastes and architecture -interior design to provide a panorama of urban housing, explaining the reasons for such a development, thereby emphasising the role of architects and interior designers.

Page: 82
SOMETHING ABOUT TRADITIONAL HOUSING PATTERNS IN CENTRAL VIETNAM• Nguyen Thuong Hy

In the large area of the central land, Quang Nam should be selected as the land where many cultures have taken their roots and interacted, including indigenous cultures, such as Sa Huynh, Champa, Great Viet along with imported cultures from China, Japan and Europe.
