Balkrishna Doshi<\/a>, also known as\u00a0B.V. Doshi<\/a>\u00a0or simply Doshi, has been named this year\u2019s\u00a0Pritzker Prize\u00a0<\/a>Laureate. His extensive portfolio of\u00a0educational<\/a>,\u00a0cultural<\/a>, public administration, and\u00a0residential<\/a>\u00a0projects is matched only by his contribution to architectural culture\u2014from founding The School of Architecture at\u00a0Ahmedabad\u00a0<\/a>(now known as the Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology) to co-authoring the\u00a0Habitat Bill of Rights<\/a>, among others.<\/a>\u00a0Yet, his vividly illustrated conceptual\u00a0drawings<\/a>\u00a0reveal as much, if not more, of the architect\u2019s relationship with building, history, tradition, culture, and\u00a0modernism.<\/a><\/p>\n

From the concept study for the vaulted canopies of the\u00a0Sangath Studio<\/a>\u00a0to the Vidhyadhar Nagar\u00a0Masterplan<\/a>, Doshi\u2019s graphic images appear to filter modernist ideals through the lens of his native India. These Purist-like drawings, recalling his time spent in the office of\u00a0Le Corbusier<\/a>\u00a0and their later collaborations, mix with the narrativity, symbolism, and vibrancy of Mughal miniature paintings. In the concept drawing for the Aranya Social\u00a0Housing\u00a0<\/a>project, the historic depiction of fables is adapted into a shifting axonometric streetscape of vendors, vehicles, and public life\u2014a negotiation between modernity and tradition echoed in Doshi\u2019s architecture. These\u00a0drawings<\/a>\u00a0not only speak to the qualities embodied in his architecture, but in the architect himself.<\/p>\n
